Alaler Gharer Dulal Bengali: The writer used the pseudonym Tekchand Thakur for this allaer. The novel describes the society of the nineteenth century Calcutta also known as Kolkataand the bohemian lifestyle of the protagonist named Matilal.
The novel is a landmark in the history of Bengali language and Bengali literatureas it used Cholitobhasa laaler form of the Bengali language for the first time in print. The novel also happens to be one of the earliest Bengali novels. The novel was first published serially in a monthly magazine, Masik Patrika.
Later, a dramatised version was staged at the Bengal Theatre January The novel is a landmark in the history of Bengali language and Bengali literature, as it used Cholitobhasa colloquial form of the Bengali language for the first time in print. History This Sanskritised form of Bengali is notable for its variations in verb forms and the vocabulary which is mainly composed of Sanskrit or tatsama words. It was mainly a vocabulary making it easier for literary works in Sanskrit to be translated and understood at that time. Notable among them was Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, who standardised the alphabets and paved the path for literary works. As a result, the Hindu pundits chose the path of sanskritisation to make a “pure” language which was not to be used in day to day conversation but would be used as a modern representative of classical languages into which the works of Sanskrit literature can be translated.
